Three Sri Lankans have been sentenced to three years imprisonment and subsequent deportation for stealing from the safe of a government department last summer.

The men were caught and brought to justice with the help of the footage recorded by a camera installed in the department’s building.
The CCTV photos showed them carrying the safe away.
A clerk in the General Authority of Radio and Television told the court that the safe in his office was found missing when he came to the office on August 3 last year.
He said that he used to leave the keys of the safe behind when he left the office. When it was stolen, the safe contained QR3000 and some documents.
One of the accused, a cleaning worker in the department, knew about the keys and sought the help of his friends to steal the money.
The court said that it was satisfied with the suspect’s confession at the interrogation stage.
Judge Mamon Hamour said that the suspects led the police to the safe and that alone was sufficient to convict them.
The verdict is still open for an appeal in a higher court.
